Well, it's not so much that OpenGL sucks -- its that on Windows, DX is used more, so card manufacturers give less of a damn about GL, just supporting the basics like you said.

On Macs and under Linux, OpenGL is the only thing, so whatever features your card supports, the drivers there are written to expose them through OpenGL [although, you're still up a creek with Linux, due to various driver issues, but it's getting better].

@Aybabtus:
It's integrated on a bunch of motherboards, and your average laptop will have Intel video.
Also, I love Linux, but I really don't see Windows leaving within the next 5-10 years. Especially when Windows is a bit faster on my machine and supports more software, and the general public indifference towards Linux.
And also, Wine has billions of issues, so it can't really replace Windows now, if ever.

[and yes, I know this post and your comment are ancient]

Thanks for your post GearGod, I needed a simple perspective corrected polygon to simulate flowing water in a 2d game (GM8.1), and I think I'll adopt your solution :)

cheers for dropping this story. I am certainly tired of struggling to find relevant and intelligent commentary on this topic. Everybody these days appear to go to extremes to either drive home their viewpoint or recommend that everyone else in the globe is wrong. cheers for your concise and relevant insight.

Hi bicubic,
just stopping by to say thanks for the workaround of the very annoying Huawei mobile broadband full-window dragging issue which I link to above.
Thanks, you helped me a lot! (Unfortunately I cant post a thank you in the above forum since it is closed for posting)

Nice article!!

I’m trying to implement lookup tables for color correction in my engine (http://xnafinalengine.codeplex.com/) and I find your blog. There is no mystery in the shader code (the GPU2 article was very clear) but the Photoshop tips and the texture generation code are very helpful.

Thanks.
