Stop using IE6!
Traffic statistics show that 52% of visitors here are using Firefox, which is awesome. However they show that the next most common browser is IE6 at 22%. People running that piece of crap should really switch to a real browser. I never hated it, I just plain didn’t use it because it sucked and Opera offered much more. Now however, I joined the ranks of web developers who hate it with a passion and understood why they do. Nothing bloody works!
The layout for this site is pretty much consistent between ff and opera, but in ie it’s completely different, and really fucked up. Things are in the wrong places, PNGs don’t show up seethrough, this that.. Bleh. The png issue especially is driving me nuts. I implemented a fix that tricks it into rendering them properly but you’ll see every png with an image cannot be displayed X over it.
People do yourelf a favour and stop using that piece of shit that only Microsoft could call a browser. At the very least, move on to IE7. Firefox and Opera are years ahead in terms of features. Extensions, skins, rss readers, quickdial, billions of things that IE doesn’t have.
(Wild-Tiger addon:) And don’t forget security issues and all that. IE is a death-trap, because IE only updates when they feel like it. More to the point, IE is targeted by virus’ not only because hackers have had years to penetrate it, but because it’s such a popular browser it makes it the better target.

Every time you use IE a developer cries…

Mmm. People actually have to be told to stop using IE. That makes me sad. It’s rather sad that people use something that Microsoft uses in order to keep tabs on them.
In case you didn’t know, IE is hard-coded into the Windows kernel. They use it to keep tabs on you that way they know what you’re doing, and that’s how they decide to use Palladium to get into your system, and say, “Hey, let’s shut down his NIC,” or the like.
Why is it that people even use Windows to begin with? Oh well.
So yeah. IE is evil. Unless you like having an unfixable hole in your system that allows people to monitor what you have within it.

Security note anyone doesn’t already know: If you don’t use IE as your primary browser, disable whatever options you can. It’s a giant gateway to security hell, even if you don’t use it.

That’s basically what I said, just condensed. Haha. Good job, Dave.

umm some schools in THE NEDERLANDS use that like my school

Indeed, my school insists on using IE7. I’ve pushed for the use of Firefox or Opera, but they won’t do it, probably out of fear of some of the more computer-savvy in the school. To be honest, it seems like the IT guys have little idea what they’re doing anyway.

haha. at least your school still doesn’t use IE6.
What would be useful is an effective method to find if you are using IE6, and showing a link right on top saying “Does this page look broken?” that goes to a page with an image of the IE symbol crossed off in red, and links to firefox, ie7 and opera or whatever on the side of it.
even the big sites dont support those older browsers anymore much
